Joss Whedon to Produce ‘Batgirl’ Movie for DC Extended Universe

LOS ANGELES – Joss Whedon is set to take “Batgirl” to the Big Screen, according to reports today.

The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator is set to take on the super heroine for DC Extended Universe and Warner Bros, say published reports. Whedon is set to write, direct and produce the yet untitled film which would be the Batman franchise’s next opus. Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer for Warner Bros. Pictures Group will head the project with producers Jon Berg and Geoff Johns.

Batgirl made her debut on DC Comics in 1967 when she was introduced as Barbara Gordon, daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon. The story was called “The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl,” written by Gardner Fox and drawn by artist Carmine Infantino. She is perhaps better known for her portrayal by Yvonne Craig on the 1966-68 ABC TV series “Batman.”

Whedon had written and directed “The Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” for Disney-Marvel, but he is perhaps better known for creating the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” “Firefly,” “Dollhouse,” and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

DC Extended Universe’s slate of upcoming films “Wonder Woman,”; “Justice League,” releasing on Nov. 17; and “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa is set for a December 2018 release date.
